Rural England Supporter – Northumbrian Water Group

Northumbrian Water Group is committed to protecting and improving the environment for everyone.  We are an organisation rooted and dependent on the environment; we place great importance on British farming and our countryside.

Our vision is to be the leading provider of sustainable water and waste water services in the UK. We serve 4.5 million people in the north east and the south east of England; including large rural areas. We recognise that we have a duty to protect and support our rural communities that live in our operating areas.

We work closely in partnership with many farmers and agricultural groups through our catchment work. This activity has enabled farmers to access free training, advice and capital funding, to help make lasting improvements for farmers and benefit the natural environment.

Being a landowner in a number of rural locations, we are also proud to have supported the development of affordable rural housing in a number of locations.

We operate the largest man-made reservoir in northern Europe, Kielder Water. It was designed to provide a sustainable water supply for the North East well into the future. Kielder village and the North Tyne Valley in which it sits, contains some of the most remote communities in England. As well as supporting the North East with a sustainable water supply, Kielder Water has helped these rural communities.

We are a key partner in the Kielder Water & Forest Park Development Trust – a registered charity dedicated to maximising the natural assets of Kielder Water & Forest Park and developing it as a tourism destination. Since the build of the reservoir, the local community in the North Tyne Valley has benefited significantly – sustainable new jobs and new sources of income created both directly by Northumbrian Water (associated with the operation of the reservoir) and indirectly (provision of services) by the influx of tourists. KWFP now receives more than 300,000 visitors every year, the boost in tourism helping to benefit the local economy and bringing in more than money to the region.

It’s our leading work in areas like this, that has led us being recognised by a number of national and international awards. Including being listed as one of the world’s most ethical companies by the Ethisphere Institute. We are the only UK-based utility company to be awarded the title and the only water company in the world to be included on this prestigious list.
